The leader of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup Ayrton Badovini (BMW) was the fastest in the first qualifying practice session on the mythical track of Monza. Winner of the Italian championship race here last Sunday, he was leading in front of Mähr, Antonelli and Lussiana.
It was on a drying surface that Badovini did his best time. Barrier and Baz were ninth and tenth, choosing not to take too many chances. Berger, who crashed without hurting himself, will do better tomorrow than 20th. He is just in front of Michaël Savary.
Michel Garnier (team manager): “It was not bad this morning on a dry track, with Sylvain 3rd and Michaël 15th. In the afternoon the track was drying and the rain tyre got destroyed pretty quickly. We even had a mud guard ripped apart! After 5 laps, Sylvain was 4th and it was still a little bit wet. We started again with the same tyre. But the track was drying and the tyre was destroyed after 4 laps. Sylvain was then 9th. Michaël had the same type of practice and he finished 21st.”
Sylvain Barrier: “The day was not so bad. We worked on the set up, as it is the first time I am riding this bike on the wet. In the timed session, the tyre was quickly destroyed because of the long straight lines. I started again with this rain tyre but the weather conditions quickly changed. At the end of the session, I didn’t want to put a new tyre not to possibly crash. I can go faster tomorrow if it’s dry. But dry or wet, we are in the truth. We have solutions to solve the problems.”
Michaël Savary: “I had some problems this morning with the gas overflowing. But I have good sensations, the chassis is better. The balance of the bike is better for me. I had some small brake problems. I am ready and confident for tomorrow with a good bike.”
