Sylvain Barrier, excellent third, is now second of the championship. Michaël Savary crashes but he is happily unhurt.
Ayrton Badovini and his BMW were quickly leading the race and won it without problem. At the start, Davide Giugliano was the early leader, followed by Sylvain Barrier and Ayrton Badovini. Then Barrier took the lead, with Badovini, Giugliano, Berger and Baz behind him.
After 4 of the 13 laps, Badovini had a good lead. His gap was bigger than 1 second in front of Giugliano, Berger and Barrier. At half distance, Badovini was still a strong leader, when Berger (in second position) crashed. Giugliano was then second 1.8 behind Badovini and Barrier was third at 3.2. The order did not change later until the finish flag.
Bad luck for the Swiss rider Michaël Savary who crashed on lap 6, happily without hurting himself.
Michel Garnier (Team manager): “It was obviously a difficult weekend. The third position is a very rewarding result. I am happy for the team and those who help us. Sylvain did a good race. This podium is well deserved. Michaël went from 15th to 8th. He still had some margin, but unfortunately he crashed. I feel sorry for him. We will work to be even better in Assen.”
Sylvain Barrier: “I was very concentrated for the start. I started well and passed a few riders in the first curve. When I was behind Giugliano, I overtook him in the straight. Then I kept the same racing lines to make sure. The bike still moves on the front and it is hard to enter the corners while braking. There is a little lack of grip at the rear. Overall I am very happy. Steve Martin helped us a lot. It will be better and better. Thank you to the team and to BMW.”
Michaël Savary: “I had a good start. I am beginning to have a better feeling for the starts. During the first few laps, I fought hard. I passed some riders. Then I crashed on lap 6 when I lost the back in a fast left hand curve. The lap times were good during the race. We are competitive.”
